Lesson 1: Invest in What You Know

Introduction:

There's an idea out there that only brokers on Wall Street understand the stock market. At We Seed, we say that's all wrong. We believe that you know a lot more about the market than you think you do. Our mission is to demystify the stock market by helping you take a look at the companies you already know and love. That's what we'll do in this lesson.

Overview:

This lesson provides students with an introduction to the idea behind We Seed and leads them through a series of tasks that will help them begin to understand that the stock market made up of companies -many of which they already know. Students will identify companies they know and love and explore mini-markets that interest them.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify companies students know and interact with on a daily basis
  • Gain a basic understanding of stock symbols
  • Discover that some brands are provided by larger companies
  • Explore the makeup of specific mini-markets
  • Describe companies within mini-markets
  • Gain an understanding that the stock market is composed of companies that are all around us
Learning Environment:

The challenge can be conducted in a computer lab or as a homework assignment. There should also be class discussion.
