- What is We Seed EDU?
- 1 How does We Seed compare to Stock Market games and other simulations?
-
- We Seed is completely free and is not limited to any number of registered teacher and/or student users.
- We Seed has no limitations regarding registration, use and access. It does not limit the user to a given time period. It is a flexible resource, mirroring the real market where users can trade as they see fit. Teachers and students can use this resource freely in and out of the classroom throughout the school year.
- We Seed's can be used in both competitive and cooperative ways in order to ensure that the lesson is to get smart about finances not just about getting rich quick.
- We Seed has the flexibility for educators to establish different challenges or competitions within the We Seed system. There are no limitations and those challenges are reliant on the discretion of the educator or private classroom/ group environment.
- We Seed offers real-time stock information powered by OptionsHouse, an online brokerage owned by PEAK6, one of the most respected names in options trading.
- We Seed also creates daily content through newsfeeds within each Company Page, providing the opportunity to spark thoughtful classroom discussion around timely economic news, while relating it back to the stock market.
- We Seed speaks to students directly, in a way they will be receptive to. We Seed delivers content to students in a non-intimidating voice without talking down to them.
- We Seed has taken into account the concerns of educators and parents around the country to ensure the safety of students using the site. Using special tools, teachers can ensure that their students engage one another in groups that outside users on the site cannot find or communicate with.
- We Seed employs several tools to ensure that user behavior does not include language that is not appropriate for minors. Parents can also adjust their children's online accessibility by using We Seed's custom settings.
- We Seed is not limited to stock trading. We Seed focuses on a real-world connection between the student users and the products that they use in their lives. We Seed provides a self-paced and self-guided learning environment, which consistently highlights key points and takeaways. We Seed also provides educators with comprehensive lesson plans, best practices and class activities to help integrate We Seed into the classroom on a daily basis.

-
No. We Seed is completely web-based and you don't need any software to use it. Click here to learn more about other technical requirements.
- 3 Do I have to pay for We Seed?
-
We Seed is 100% free. The only thing we require is an email address to create an account.
- 4 Can you buy real stock on We Seed?
-
No. We Seed uses fake cash to buy real stocks via a virtual trading platform.
- 5 Can you recommend other sites where I can buy real stock?
-
No, we do not endorse or recommend outside brokerage sites. We Seed is geared toward the pre-investor who is interested in learning about stocks but isn't currently trading.
- 6 Do you include indexes, futures, options, short sales, etc?
-
No, we only work with single-company stocks. In fact, we don't even use real money - just We Seed cash.
- 7 Is the data "live"?
-
Yes, our data comes to you in real time. As long as Wall Street is open, you will have the real stock prices coming to you through We Seed, sometimes with a small delay. Normal trading hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST with some holidays.
- 8 Does We Seed meet my national and state curriculum standards?
-
Yes. Check the national and state standards sections to find out how We Seed correlates to your standards requirements.
- 9 What kinds of classes use We Seed?
-
A variety of classes can use WeSeed: finance, business, economics, and even home economics. Basically, any class that deals with personal finance, history, economics, and business can benefit from We Seed's fun and easy-to-use tools.
- 10 Which grades use We Seed?
-
We recommend We Seed for sixth-grade through high-school students looking for help understanding investing and the stock market.
- 11 Can students under 18 use the site?
-
Of course! We always encourage our users, especially kids, to be safe online, and we're always making sure that We Seed is appropriate and guarded with your students in mind. If students are under 13, please see our note below.
- 12 Can students under 13 use the site?
-
Children under 13 are welcome to use the site, but can only do so with a parent or guardian's permission and guidance. A parent/ guardian can create an account correlated to their email address. They will then be able to create a sub-portfolio (or multiple sub-portfolios) for each child. These portfolios are directly linked to the parent/ guardian's account to safeguard these young students, in conjunction with federal laws.
- 13 Can I copy the lesson plans or post them on my school wiki?
-
Definitely. We Seed's lessons are here for everyone to use. Download them. Print them. Share them. Maybe even challenge the classroom down the hall.
- 14 How can I organize my classes within We Seed?
-
An educator can create either a Team or Group. They can then choose whether to create an "Open" or "Moderated" Group or Team.
- 15 What is the difference between a Team or Group? What does ???Open??? versus ???Moderated??? mean?
-
In a team, all of the students work together to build and manage one Portfolio. This means everyone decides as a group which stocks to buy and which stocks to sell. Then you can compare how your team's Portfolio is doing against other team's Portfolio's. Teams can be very useful if you want to break your students into smaller groups to compete against one another.
In a Group, each of the students has an individual portfolio and their actions are tracked within the group environment. Group investment and progress is aggregated from the individual progress of each member.
In a Moderated Group or Team, students can request to join the group but must be approved by the group administrator.
In an Open Group or Team, students can join the group without approval. Keep in mind, however, that any We Seed user can join the group without approval.

Right now, there is not a way to formally challenge another team. However, many groups or classrooms partake in a little friendly competition among themselves. So feel free to start an informal competition with the class down the hall to see who can pick the best stocks over the course of a week, or even a month. Just search for their group name under the Share tab and take a peek at how your competition is doing.

- 24 How are you different from other stock-market simulation sites?
-
Other stock-market simulation sites are based on competition, which encourages a superficial knowledge of investing. But We Seed wants users to learn about the market on their own, which will help them further down the road. The site also offers videos, blogs, learning materials, and is completely free. The bottom line: We Seed is about getting smart, not getting rich.
