Supermarkets and threads seem to have very little in common, except that Ruddick Corporation runs two businesses that traffic in both. One is Harris Teeter, a regional chain of supermarkets in the Southeast, and the other is American &Efird, which manufactures industrial sewing threads, embroidery threads, and textiles. A&E’s threads are used by manufacturers of apparel, automotive materials, home furnishings, medical supplies, and footwear.
