He might not be the richest guy in the world anymore, but Microsoft's uber-geek Bill Gates brought technological ease into a majority of American homes with Windows operating systems. Microsoft develops and supports software and hardware that include operating systems, a wide range of application systems, and all sorts of electronic goodies. Microsoft doesn't forget the fun, too - the company sells the Xbox 360 video game console and the Zune digital music player.
11:16 AM Eastern Standard Time, 02/08/2010 (MidnightTrader) -- Technology shares were mixed in mid-morning trading Monday amid company news and analyst comments on some widely held names. An article in this week's Barron's indicated that Motorola (MOT) shares look increasingly attractive on a sum-of-the-parts basis. The company appears to be worth at least $9 a share, the article said, even though a company breakup is unlikely. Motorola plans to spin off its cellphone unit, and reportedly has weighed a sale of its home and networks division, which makes cable-TV set-up boxes and cable modems for high-speed Internet access. Motorola won't comment on the speculation. Irvine Sensors (IRSN) says one of its existing purchase orders with Optics 1, Inc. has been modified to include initial units of Clip-On Thermal Imager systems to be built under a $37.8 million contract recently awarded to Optics 1 by the Naval Surface Warfare Center of Crane, Indiana. Amazon.com (AMZN)is up slightly after the company was upgraded by an analyst who sees Wall Street underestimating the online retailer's Kindle device.
