Consumer shares are broadly mixed ahead of the bell Friday, as investors fret about the sluggish economy still keeping people from opening up their wallets. Worries persist even though the Labor Department reported U.S. January jobless rate falling to 9.7 percent, its lowest level since August.
In Britain, personal insolvencies jumped in the fourth quarter as the recession pushed up unemployment and forced a record number of Britons to default on their debts.
