By: Erica Feldkamp, WeSeed Writer From Audrey Hepburn to Jessica Simpson, Hollywood mavens might to do the walking, but their aviators do all the talking. Aviator sunglasses have been popular well before any of these starlets ever saw a camera crew. This summer, the aviators might hit their peak performance, with stars like Angelina Jolie wearing them like a tattoo. So as stores stock up on these shades, you might consider "stocking" up yourself. Now, before I get to that 30% discount you're dying to hear about, who is credited with developing these must-have specs? A. Ray-Ban B. Bausch & Lomb C. A pilot D. All of the above Jessica Simpson might say, "None of the above. The answer is clearly chicken." But for all you who picked A, B, or C, well... you're at least partially correct. In 1937, Pilot John MacCready asked Bausch & Lomb to create a pair of sunglasses to protect pilots' eyes. The Ray-Ban Aviator's popularity soared as pictures of aviator-donning General MacArthur hit U.S. Since then, Hollywood-types, high socialites, and this guy, have maintained the pilot style long after D-Day. Ogled and acquired by Luxottica (LUX), the world's largest eyewear giant, Ray-Ban and recently-added Oakley are profitable additions to Luxottica's high-end spec line. Luxottica's owned or licensed brands include many you know well: Chanel, Bulgari, Dolce&Gabbana,Versace and Tiffany. As of the 2007 fiscal year close, shareholders received a dividend payout of 45 percent from the European market, up 17 percent from the previous year. Keeping its eyes on future growth, Luxottica just announced a 700 storefront expansion in China, offering its pricey shades and prescription eyewear to China's brand-oriented and apparently visually-challenged population. Over 90 percent of its middle aged and elderly population and greater than 80 percent of school age children need glasses. Cha-ching. However, due to the weakened dollar and slowing sales of high-end products, Luxottica's share value has dipped 31 percent from its 52 week high of $39.39.
