By: Erica Feldkamp, WeSeed Writer DKNY is going graphic with Paul Pope, a comic book artist. The collection is a 15 piece array of a tale being told in fragments on t-shirts, hoodies, and pants. The art portrays "a futuristic love story against the collision of nature and industry." DKNY says the art "melds sci-fi with the prehistoric" Hmm, a futuristic, prehistoric, industrial love story? DKNY and Pope are naming this love child 2089, a line that will be released in September of 2008. Having designed tour posters and album art for White Stripes, Heavy Trash, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pope is riding DKNY's coattails to emphasize his flair for Pop Art. A talented artist no doubt, he was voted Best Writer/Artist at the 2007 Eisner Awards, the comics industry's Oscars. Using clothing as his new medium, Pope sees this as his chance to "steal Pop Art back from Warhol." But why do you want to steal ugly art from a dead guy? And why would DKNY want to slap that on their nice jeans. Pop Art originated in England in the 50s, and the world still hasn't forgiven them for it. First the plague and then this, when will the Brits let up? Two words come to mind on the topic of Pop Art, one of which is "Andy Warhol," an artist who couldn't make sense out of his own pieces. "Garish" is the other word. DKNY Jeans is a lifestyle denim brand which is owned and distributed through a licensed agreement with Liz Claiborne, LLC(LIZ). If other brands follow this off-beat style, the Claiborne company might see some stock price interest. But if it goes it alone and nobody catches onto Pope's puzzling toils, they just might walk away with just the shirt on their back - and an ugly one at that. There might be a light on the horizon. Look what happened to Uggs. 2089 might catch on, but if it doesn't, be prepared for people to ask, "What the hell happened to your jeans?"
