Recently, I found the perfect example of how keeping up on the news (be it about pets or investing in general) can help you find companies to potentially invest in. A little Internet sleuthing turned up a blog post written by someone who works in the Vet industry (granted, it's a little old, but still). Turns out their practice was switching to Idexx and wanted to know what other people thought about it. Check out the comments on the post and you'll see it's mostly positive. This is the kind of ground-level info that gives regular people like you and me a leg up on the so-called experts. One commenter mentions a company called Antech (WOOF), which besides having the most appropriate stock ticker around is Idexx's direct competitor. Now we've discovered a company, some positive opinions about it from the people who matter, and a direct competitor if we want to see how the two compare against each other.
