If you're in the market for a new computer, then Hewlett-Packard - commonly known as HP ??? is probably on your list. The company is a leader in personal computers, laptops, and printers, but the California-based company also makes digital cameras, televisions, mobile phones, and calculators.
After nearly exiting the PC business, then changing its mind last week, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) has proved it???s still interested in capturing a piece of the tablet market with the launch of Windows 7-based Slate 2. The device sports an 8.9-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, an Intel Atom Z670 CPU, 32 GB of storage space and a 3-megapixel back camera, as well as a front-facing VGA camera for video calls. If all of this sounds familiar, you???re right: the device is just a slight upgrade of the business-oriented Slate 500 which launched in October 2010, with the addition of HP???s Swype technology for easier text entry. The HP Slate 2 starts at $699 and is expected to be available worldwide later this month. HP can???t make up it???s mind and that???s a little scary. What do you think?
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is taking a hatchet to its business and doing some radical restructuring. The company is looking to spin off its industry-leading but struggling personal computer business. Wow, they???re serious. HP recently purchased Palm, but the company said it will continue trying to "optimize the value" of its purchase. HP also said it has agreed to buy British software developer Autonomy for roughly $10.2 billion in cash. Autonomy specializes in database search and other enterprise software technologies. These moves are part of the company's goal of transitioning into faster-growing like software, servers and corporate technology services. But ditching its consumer businesses will come at a steep price: HP's Personal Systems unit accounts for about 1/3 of the company's annual revenue. Despite its recent struggles, HP still sells more PCs than any other vendor, shipping 14.9 million PCs last quarter. What do you think of this?
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) jumps aboard the smartphone train. HP unveiled a long-awaited new tablet device called the TouchPad, alongside two new smartphones. This is like any other smartphone, plus it can sync with other HP devices like smartphones and printers, and it can display Web content encoded with Abobe Flash (something iPads won't do). Features of the TouchPad include a resizeable keyboard and the high-quality "Beats" audio speakers that HP features on many of its laptops. The phone is scheduled for release this summer, the Wi-Fi-only version of the TouchPad will be unveiled first, with the 3G and 4G versions hitting the market at a later date. The company plans to announce pricing later. The HP Touchpad does sound more advanced than any other smartphone, what do you think?
HP should see large profit increases with the addition of their new line of tablet PCs.
