Fortune Brands CEO pay rises 19 percent in 2009

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The president and chief executive officer of Fortune Brands Inc., which makes consumer products ranging from Jim Beam bourbon to Titleist golf equipment, received nearly $9.9 million in compensation in 2009, a nearly 19 percent increase from the previous year.

The rise in Bruce A. Carbonari's compensation was mainly because he received a performance-based bonus in 2009. He received no such bonus the previous year.

Carbonari was awarded a salary of $1.1 million, the same as in 2008. He was not awarded a bonus in either year. But he received $1.5 million in non-equity incentives and nearly $168,000 in other perks such as life insurance premiums and contributions to retirement plans.

Carbonari received stock and stock options that were worth $7 million when they were granted.

The Associated Press formula to calculate compensation includes salary, bonus, performance-related bonuses, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted during the year. The calculations don't include changes in the present value of pension benefits, and they sometimes differ from the totals companies list in filings with regulators.

Fortune Brands froze executive salaries for 2009 due to a weak performance in 2008. But last month, the company posted its first sales increase in two years and returned to a profit for the fourth quarter.
