By: Erica Feldkamp, WeSeed Editor Job loss is skyrocketing; homes are foreclosing; debt is mounting; and businesses are going bankrupt. Consumer confidence is at a bottom of the barrel low, but spirits are high - sort of. Alcohol sales are steadily on the rise, to the benefit of beverage companies and their investors. Constellation (STZ), one of the country's largest alcohol companies, reported a 50 percent increase in profits from the previous year. Spirit sales rose 9 percent while branded, premium wines wines like Robert Mondavi, Kim Crawford, and Estancia sales rose 24 percent. In this quarter alone, premium wine sales are up 7 percent, "premium" wines (defined as, get this!, $8 and above) grew 12 percent, and premium spirits grew 4 percent. Constellation did especially well this year in part due to some strategic realignment. Anticipating people's preference for premium wine, Constellation dumped several of its value wines and added a handful of slightly pricier, recognizable brand wines. Premium wines make up 70 percent of purchased wines. While consumers are upgrading their wine selection, they are still watching their wallets. To save money, more people are drinking at home rather than at restaurants and are instead heading to the local grocer or liquor store - both of which help beverage companies' bottom line. Shares were up almost 6% in early morning trading. Want to check out other beverage companies to see if other bev businesses are bubbling over? Check out WeSeed's Stockfinder and type in "alcohol." Cheers!
