By: Erica Feldkamp, WeSeed Writer Have you ever known an obsessive buyer? That's my dad. One year his focus fell on vitamins; we had more canisters of multi-vitamins than the local pharmacy. Last year it was frozen pizzas. This year, it's energy saving light bulbs. And unlike the freezer full of pizza, this might actually do a world of good. Along with the products comes the spiel about the product's quality or the product's benefits. And this is one message worth passing on: according to Energy Star (and my dad), if every American home replaced one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR bulb, the country "would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars." Those are some fairly impressive numbers from one little light. Go home, and count the number of bulbs you could change. Multiply the energy saving figures by any number, and you can see how small changes can make the world of a difference. If saving the world isn't your bag, think about your personal savings. An eco-bulb uses 75 percent less energy than the standard bulb and lasts three times as long. By plugging the number of light bulbs you use into this calculator, you can estimate how many dollars you will save per year. Since I have a small place, I entered in four low watt and four high watt bulbs. If I were to change the eight bulbs, I would save about $70 per year and $380 over the course of the life of the light bulb. To promote this initiative, General Electric(GE) and Wal-Mart(WMT) have linked arms produces eco-bulbs at affordable prices. These saver bulbs can be purchased at Lowes(LOW), CVS(CVS), and Home Depot(HD). Small steps can make a big impact. Save the world one bulb at a time.
