Do you forgo heat in the winter, cool air in the summer, and only cook over an open fire? Unless your name is Huck, chances are you are one of the 300 million people in the United States who contributes to the consumption the nation's fossil fuel energy. Few will say that there isn't an energy crisis. And fewer will say that coal is an illimitable source of energy, which is why many people are beginning to wonder what can be done about this shortage. It is very likely that this commodity will get more and more pricy as the coal stash dwindles, leaving a lot of people looking longingly at their holiday stockings. From conservationists who are interested in a greener America to the cost-conscious who don't want to put up with their ever-escalating energy bills, homeowners are beginning to tap into other resources by making their homes a little more Earth friendly. The recent trend is to build zero-energy homes. Solar panels are one of the first technologies available for purchase. In the 2002 Building America project, a Department of Energy sponsored program, Centex Homes built a house that used roof-mounted solar panels to generate 100 percent of the home's needs. New technologies are being designed to maximize natural gas efficiency and water consumption as well. Here are a few other companies that are making strides in renewable energy innovation: Evergreen Solar(ESLR), Energy Conversion Devices(ENER), Aventine Renewable Energy(AVR), while Renewable Energy Group(RWE), the largest operator, marketer, and distributor of biodiesel in the U.S., is waiting to go public.
